The Milago Center relies heavily on the participation and support of its volunteers and mentors, who can apply their knowledge to find creative and practical solutions. We would never see the miracles that are achieved here without them. The wisdom imparted by our mentors and volunteers is key to the Milago culture.
Our programs connect our youth with positive adult role models. Our Mentoring program fosters nurturing, supportive, intergenerational relationships that are essential to building self esteem. Our volunteers act as our ambassadors educating the community on the needs of our children and working with us to make our community a better place for all of us.
Mentoring Miracles
The Mentoring Miracles program provides site-based mentoring for students enrolled in the STARS program. The program connects our children with positive adult role models. The program fosters nurturing, supportive, intergenerational relationships that are essential in building self esteem in children. “Through the mentoring relationship, at-risk children can come to see themselves as capable, competent, and empowered problem-solvers who can construct their own knowledge and successfully realize their learning goals. “ “Each mentoring relationship develops its own culture,” says Barbara Stark, Operations Director, “depending on the interests and personalities of the mentor and the child.”
The mentors go through a rigorous screening process to ensure the safety and anonymity of the children, as well as an orientation process to familiarize the mentors with Milagro’s culture and climate. The mentors are asked to commit to a minimum of six months with their mentees, although most of them stay on far longer than that to continue the relationship. After a mentor/mentee match has been made, it is tracked, observed and supervised by the Mentor Manager utilizing an evaluation program called MentorPro®. The Mentoring Miracles Program has been recognized for its excellence by the Harvard Mentoring Project and the Palm Beach County Mentor Center. There are currently 25 mentors matched with 25 children - our hope is that EVERY child can have their own mentor.
"Volunteering at Milagro has been the most amazing experience. The kids have so much spirit and energy that just spending a few hours with them has made a tremendous impact on me. No matter what kind of day I am having, I know that coming to Milagro will put a smile on my face!! Being able to spend time with the kids and help them with their homework and just hear about their day has been very rewarding. The staff are amazing and work hard to create a loving, caring and creative environment that the kids can thrive in." - Jennifer Robins, Volunteer

" My Milagro experience has been uplifting and wonderful. It has been a thrill to watch my mentee grow both academically and emotionally. As much as I have helped her, she too, has helped me. The Milagro experience is truly magical."- Arlene Marks, Mentor
