Position: Mentor
Commitment Time: Minimum of one year commitment, visiting consistently at least every other week (preferably every week), for a minimum four hours per month
Areas of Involvement: Commitment to developing supportive relationship with one or more program participants in Academic, Social, and/or Cultural Experience and Expression component
Qualifications:
- Sincere desire to help a student or students achieve academic improvement while developing personally
- Ability to communicate to children openly and without judgment
- Strong listening skills
- Ability to establish relationship based on mutual respect
- Interest in the needs and concerns of children
- Practical problem-solving skills
- Ability to suggest options and alternatives
- Sensitivity to people of different educational, economic, cultural, or racial backgrounds
Responsibilities:
- Make a minimum one year commitment to developing and maintaining a mentor relationship with a child
- Attend volunteer orientation, trainings, and support sessions
- Meet with mentee on a regular basis to establish working relationship and support
- Keep mentor journals and other information as requested by staff
